Non-resident Indian (NRI) men who wed in the country will have to compulsorily register their marriages within a week and update their marital status on their passports, central government officials said. The decision by an inter-ministerial panel on Wednesday is an attempt to prevent NRI Husband their wives.
Failure to update their marital status on passports can result in the document getting revoked, one of four officials said on condition of anonymity . “The group of ministers decided that necessary amendments will have to be made in the Passport Act to incorporate the changes,” one of the officials added.Another proposal discussed was holding the properties of NRI offenders in escrow in case they abscond abandoning their spouse. Escrow is a legal concept in which a financial instrument or an asset is held by a third party on behalf of two other parties that are in the process of completing a transaction.
The official said the move would require amendment of three legislations- Code of Criminal Procedure, Marriage Act and the Passports Act.
